Guilford County Considers New Sales Tax to Boost Teacher Salaries
Residents of Guilford County are facing a critical decision this election season. A proposed quarter-cent sales tax aims to generate substantial funding for the region’s educators.
If approved, the tax would add an extra 25 cents for every $100 spent on eligible purchases, excluding essentials such as gas and groceries. Officials project that this initiative could yield approximately $30 million annually, with the majority earmarked for boosting teacher salaries in the county.
Guilford County Schools currently lags behind neighboring districts like Wake, Mecklenburg, and Forsyth in terms of teacher pay. The school board has officially endorsed the tax proposal, stating it is essential for the district’s ability to “recruit, retain and reward top talent who provide high-quality instruction and opportunities that the Guilford County Board of Education seeks to give every child in its county.”
Previous efforts to pass this sales tax have failed, largely due to ambiguous language about its allocation. However, this time, the breakdown of the funding is clearly outlined: 70% is designated for teacher salary supplements, 18% will go towards firefighter equipment, 8% is allocated to Guilford Technical Community College, and the remainder will benefit five local municipalities.
