Michigan Initiates Resource Hub for Childcare Businesses to Thrive
Amid mounting challenges such as licensing demands, staffing shortages, and pricing struggles faced by childcare business owners in Michigan, state agencies are taking proactive measures. A new resource hub is being launched to provide essential support to these businesses, aiming to help them sustain and expand their operations.
The Small Business Association of Michigan Foundation will spearhead this initiative, which is a collaboration between the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP), the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), and Pulse at the W.E. Upjohn Institute.
The newly established hub will serve as a conduit, linking childcare businesses to vital tools and support systems necessary for their growth. This support network is based on an existing model previously developed by MEDC, tailored specifically for the unique needs of childcare providers.
Empowering Childcare Providers
Emily Laidlaw, deputy director of the Office of Early Education for MiLEAP, highlighted the impact of the small business support hub. “The small business support hub has already had a great impact on Michigan’s small businesses. They have served over 8,800 businesses, and over 5,000 jobs have been created,” said Laidlaw.
Laidlaw emphasized the significance of childcare services, especially in underserved communities where access is limited. The hub is set to concentrate efforts on expanding services in these areas, ensuring families can rely on accessible childcare options.
Addressing the Needs of Childcare Businesses
Childcare business owners often operate without the consistent economic support available to other sectors. The hub’s mission is to bridge this gap, integrating childcare businesses into broader business support systems.
“Each childcare business will need something different. Childcare providers are experts in caring for children, but creating a budget, and adding more employees if they’d like to expand to serve more children. Understanding how to do that, how to offer better benefits, or to expand into a different space to better serve their needs; all of these need a business plan to go with it,” Laidlaw explained. The hub aims to provide operational support tailored to help childcare businesses achieve their goals.
