Stingray Beach reopens at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo after renovations

Revamped Stingray Exhibit Reopens at Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

After a period of closure, the popular Stingray Beach at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is welcoming visitors once again. The exhibit had been closed since last summer due to the unfortunate loss of several stingrays, prompting a thorough review and renovation of its facilities.

The zoo undertook an extensive overhaul of the exhibit’s infrastructure to ensure the wellbeing of its aquatic residents. This included upgrading life support systems, enhancing water biofiltration equipment, and improving protocols for monitoring water chemistry, all aimed at maintaining a stable and healthy habitat for the stingrays. The zoo’s animal care, health, and life support teams spearheaded these efforts.

While the public’s interactions with the stingrays have become more controlled, visitors can still enjoy observing the cownose stingrays. Trained zoo staff will be available to guide interactions and manage feeding sessions, ensuring a safe and educational experience for all.

Luis Padilla, President and CEO of the zoo, emphasized the importance of fostering connections between people and marine life. “Stingrays are incredible ambassadors for our oceans, and meeting them connects us to the complexity of life that we strive to protect and conserve,” Padilla stated. “We are excited to welcome guests back to Stingray Beach, and provide an educational, fun experience around these magnificent animals.”
