Microsoft Boosts Wisconsin Economy with New Data Center in Mount Pleasant

In a significant development for Wisconsin’s tech landscape, Microsoft has announced the completion of a large-scale data center in Mount Pleasant. This new facility, situated on a sprawling 315-acre campus, is now fully operational, bringing with it approximately 550 new jobs to the region.

The emergence of the first data center marks just the beginning for Microsoft in Mount Pleasant. Construction is already underway for a second center adjacent to the current site. Expected to be completed by 2028, this expansion could see the number of full-time employees in the area rise to 800.

Earlier this year, the Mount Pleasant village board greenlit ambitious plans for the potential addition of up to 15 more data centers over the next decade. The initial facility, known as “Fairwater,” is celebrated as a “historic milestone” by Mount Pleasant Village President David DeGroot, who emphasized its role in boosting local opportunities and strengthening Wisconsin’s long-term economic prospects.

The Great Lakes region is experiencing a surge in data center constructions, driven in large part by the growing data needs associated with artificial intelligence technologies. However, these developments have not been without controversy. Some Wisconsin residents have raised concerns about the potential environmental impact, particularly regarding high energy consumption and water usage.

Concerns about resource utilization remain a topic of contention, as highlighted in ongoing discussions about the Great Lakes Compact.
