As snowfall blankets Northeast Pennsylvania, transportation officials have taken proactive measures to ensure road safety amidst the wintry conditions. In a bid to reduce accidents, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced a temporary speed limit reduction across several major highways.
Travelers are advised to reconsider their trips, with PennDOT urging only essential travel. For those on the roads, speed limits have been decreased to 45 mph on Interstate 81 stretching from Schuylkill County to the New York State line, as well as on Interstate 84 and Interstate 380 in specified counties. Winter Weather Advisory in Effect
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m. Wednesday for several counties including Bradford, Lackawanna, and Luzerne. The forecast predicts wet snow with additional accumulations up to two inches and possibly three inches in higher altitudes. “Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening commute,” states the advisory.
As the day progresses, snow is expected to reduce from west to east, potentially transitioning to rain in lower valley regions.
Impact on Local Bus Services
The adverse weather has also disrupted local public transportation. The County of Lackawanna Transit System halted services at 1:15 p.m., followed shortly by the Luzerne County Transportation Authority at 1:30 p.m. Commuters can find updates on the LCTA website.
