Residents Oppose Proposed ICE Detention Center in Concord Warehouse

Concord residents ask City Council to take stand against proposed ICE detention center

Concord Residents Voice Concerns Over Potential ICE Detention Center

In a recent Concord City Council meeting, local residents expressed strong opposition to a proposed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center. The facility, which may be established at a 414,000-square-foot warehouse on Weddington Road, could potentially house up to 1,500 detainees.

ICE has been actively purchasing warehouses across the country for conversion into detention centers, and Concord has become a focal point in this initiative. The New York Times reported on ICE’s interest in the Weddington Road property, sparking public outcry during the council meeting.

Concerns over the proposed facility are not new. In April, residents voiced apprehensions that such a development would negatively impact immigrant communities and fundamentally change the character of Concord.

Rebecca Hannah Patton, a Concord local, addressed the council, urging them to oppose the project. She stated, “For two months, we’ve come before you warning that Concord is a target for a private ICE detention center. By refusing to pass a resolution, you are accidentally sending a message that Concord is a soft target.”

Council member Alvarys Santana expressed her disapproval of the facility, advocating for a resolution against it. “To me, it’s a nightmare, a big nightmare,” Santana remarked. “But from a safety perspective, how do we expect people to speak out on crimes, to speak out on different things, when the possibility is that depending on the way that they look, they’re going to be targeted?”

Adding to the uncertainty, a leasing agent for the Weddington Road warehouse mentioned that ICE had not made any contact regarding a potential acquisition, leaving the situation ambiguous.
