Greensboro Police Department Secures Grant for Enhanced Safety Measures
In a significant boost to its public safety initiatives, the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) is set to receive a $500,000 grant following a fruitful collaboration with a federal program. The U.S. Department of Justice has allocated these funds after a successful three-year partnership that saw a remarkable 42 percent reduction in homicides in 2024, with numbers continuing to fall this year.
The grant will be directed towards bolstering the city’s Real Time Information Center, a strategic move aimed at enhancing the efficacy of public safety operations. This development coincides with the launch of Greensboro’s new initiative, the Greensboro Collaborative Action Network (GSO CAN), designed to improve community safety efforts.
During a recent press conference, Ivey Ghee, the GSO CAN Facilitator, emphasized the initiative’s goal of strengthening the bond between law enforcement and the communities they serve. “We are stepping forward with one clear message: Greensboro can reduce violence, Greensboro can foster trust, and Greensboro can build a safer, stronger future for every neighborhood,” Ghee stated.
The initiative aims to tackle the root causes of violence and leverage public safety data to drive meaningful progress. The first meeting of the group is scheduled for January 8, at 4:30 p.m. at the Yvonne J. Johnson Event Center at Barber Park.
