Allegiant Pilots Rally at Asheville Airport Amid Contract Stalemate
Pilots from Allegiant Airlines gathered at Asheville Regional Airport on Tuesday, voicing concerns over stalled contract negotiations. This protest was part of a coordinated effort involving all 22 Allegiant pilot bases nationwide.
Rich Matyskiela, an Allegiant pilot participating in the picket during his time off, emphasized the outdated nature of their current contract, which was ratified nearly a decade ago. He stated, “The company has chosen to draw out our negotiations. They’ve chosen to delay and to demand concessions. And the Allegiant pilots, what we deserve is a contract that delivers the compensation, the benefits and the work rules that our peers across the industry already enjoy.”
The pilots are represented by Teamsters Local 2118, which is now in mediation talks with Allegiant under the guidance of the National Mediation Board. Should these discussions reach an impasse, a potential strike could be on the horizon next year.
In response to the demonstration, Allegiant spokesperson Hector Mejia reassured travelers, stating that bookings and travel plans would remain unaffected. “Tuesday, the members of IBT 2118 will exercise their right to conduct informational picketing,” he noted. “This is not a work stoppage, nor is one imminent. We are operating our full schedule and do not anticipate any disruptions related to the informational picketing.”
Mejia further added that Allegiant has proposed what he described as “a competitive package” for the pilots, affirming the airline’s dedication to reaching a fair agreement.
