Reno Mayoral Candidates Discuss Key Issues at Pre-Election Forum

Reno mayoral candidates outline challenges and solutions

Reno Mayoral Candidates Address Pressing Issues in Recent Forum

As early voting commences for this year’s primary election, Reno residents are eager to learn more about their mayoral candidates. A recent forum, moderated by KUNR Senior Correspondent Bert Johnson and co-hosted by the League of Women Voters, provided a platform for candidates to outline their strategies for tackling the city’s challenges. Approximately 100 community members attended the event, demonstrating a strong interest in the future leadership of Reno.

The forum featured seven candidates: former Lieutenant Governor Kate Marshall, Ward 1 Council member Kathleen Taylor, Corinthia Yancey, Jesse Razo, Ward 5 Council member Devon Reese, George “Eddie” Lorton, and Tim Ross. Each addressed what they perceive as Reno’s most significant challenge and how they plan to address it.

Kate Marshall emphasized housing as the paramount issue across the country, noting her personal connection to the struggle for affordable housing. She advocates for strategically placed multi-family units to strengthen economic ties within the community, citing a model in Las Vegas where homes are built affordably on city-owned land.

Kathleen Taylor focused on the fiscal health of Reno, pointing to a persistent budget deficit of $24 to $26 million over the past two years, which could grow to $40 million in a few years. Taylor suggested regional collaboration with Sparks and Washoe County to eliminate service duplication and internal reorganization to stabilize the budget.

Corinthia Yancey concurred with Taylor on the importance of budget reform. She stressed the need for a structured redistribution of funds to address public safety, housing, and youth programs, aiming for tangible results through decisive action.

Jesse Razo proposed a fundamental change to the city’s governance system, suggesting that Reno has outgrown its current setup. His vision includes establishing Reno as a “safe haven” and opening its doors to diverse communities globally.

Devon Reese highlighted the Truckee River as a unifying element for Reno’s residents, advocating for a collective vision that transcends political and socioeconomic divides. Reese emphasized the importance of community cohesion over policy debates.

George “Eddie” Lorton presented a pragmatic approach to affordable housing, recommending that 20 percent of new apartment units be designated as affordable. He called for better oversight on contracts and a business-like approach to city management to improve quality of life and address homelessness.

Tim Ross reiterated the importance of a balanced budget to ensure a high quality of life. He questioned the adequacy of current budget assessments and advocated for a thorough review to avoid unnecessary financial burdens on residents.

Note: Candidates John Wayne Zink and Greg Nuttle were also invited to participate but did not attend the forum.
