Supernovas Make Coaching Change Amid Challenging Season Start

Omaha Supernovas fire coach with six games left in season

Supernovas Aim for New Direction After Coaching Change

In a surprising mid-season shakeup, the Supernovas have decided to part ways with head coach Luka Slabe. This change comes as the team navigates a challenging season with an 11-11 record in their current league, a stark contrast to their previous 21-7 performance in the Pro Volleyball Federation where they claimed the regular season title.

Slabe, who took over from Laura Kuhn, had a promising start, following Kuhn’s successful 2024 season which included a playoff championship win. However, the team’s recent struggles prompted the management to seek a new direction. “These decisions are never easy, but we felt a change was needed at this time to align with the expectations and direction of our organization,” stated Supernovas Co-owner Kirk Thompson in a news release. “We appreciate Luka’s contributions and wish him the best moving forward.”

Stepping into the interim head coach role is Thomas Robson, a familiar face within the team. Robson has been with the Supernovas since their beginning and will maintain his position as an assistant coach next year, as confirmed by his contract extension. “Thomas has been a big part of what we’ve built here, and we have full belief in him stepping into this role,” said John Cook, the team’s general manager and co-owner, in a news release.

The Supernovas have not disclosed when they plan to hire a permanent head coach. Meanwhile, the team stands in third place within their eight-team league and is gearing up for their upcoming match against the Dallas Rise. This game is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, marking an important opportunity for the team to regain their momentum.
