Keisha Lance Bottoms Advocates for Health Care and Housing Reforms in Athens
In a vibrant gathering in Athens, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Keisha Lance Bottoms outlined her vision for Georgia during the 2026 Georgia Chamber Congressional Luncheon. Her agenda focused on crucial issues, such as health care affordability and housing accessibility, aiming to address concerns prevalent among state residents.
Bottoms fervently argued for Medicaid expansion, emphasizing its potential to transform health care access across Georgia. She highlighted the ripple effects of the current system’s inadequacies, noting, “People have asked, well what difference does it make to me, if I don’t have Medicaid?” She further elaborated, “Well, when you go on that hunting trip in South Georgia, God forbid if there is an accident, you may be over an hour away from the nearest hospital. If you go to your closest hospital, and that emergency room is overrun with people, that’s because people often don’t have primary care physicians.”
The discussion also turned to economic growth and the pressing issue of affordable housing. Bottoms expressed concern about the influence of large corporations on the housing market, stating, “Because what’s happening, a lot of corporations or entities are buying up entire stocks of housing. So, it’s making it increasingly difficult, even from the way that they are able to bid on these houses, for that first-time homebuyer to have a competitive chance of buying a house. They are able to drive up the price, and again it creates instability in our communities.”
Adding to the discourse, Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson also shared his perspectives at the event, ensuring a comprehensive dialogue on the future of Georgia.
