Political Rivals Pillen and Walz Compete for Nebraska’s Governorship

As the gubernatorial race heats up in Nebraska, both Gov. Jim Pillen and his Democratic opponent Lynne Walz are claiming strong support from voters. On Tuesday, each candidate released statements emphasizing their campaign strengths and financial backing.

Gov. Jim Pillen’s campaign highlighted a substantial war chest, reporting $9.5 million in cash reserves. His team described this as a historic achievement, unmatched by any other campaign in the state’s history.

“This campaign has always been about serving Nebraskans,” Pillen stated, expressing his gratitude for the widespread support. He attributed his campaign’s appeal to policies like income tax cuts and his focus on upholding Nebraska’s values. A campaign spokesperson noted that nearly 6,000 donors have contributed to Pillen’s efforts since his 2022 victory, with 94% of these supporters residing within Nebraska.

In a statement released just two hours later, Lynne Walz’s campaign countered with claims of outpacing Pillen in fundraising since the May primary. Walz’s team reported raising over $292,400 during this period, surpassing Pillen’s $163,700.

Bridget Ryan, Walz’s campaign manager, remarked, “Our latest finance report demonstrates the growing momentum behind Lynne Walz’s campaign to bring new leadership to Nebraska.” Ryan emphasized that Walz plans to prioritize respect and affordability for Nebraskans if she wins the upcoming general election.

Walz’s campaign also pointed to an internal poll indicating a close race, with Walz and Pillen nearly tied in popularity among voters.
