In a move that could reshape Nebraska’s outdoor offerings, a former Boy Scout camp is on the verge of becoming the state’s newest state park. This development comes amid efforts to enhance recreational spaces and integrate them with existing facilities for broader public enjoyment.
On Tuesday, the Grand Island City Council will cast a decisive vote on a resolution concerning the sale of Camp Augustine to the state. The proposed agreement involves signing a memorandum of understanding, which would permit either the Nebraska Game and Parks Department or the Game and Parks Foundation to purchase the camp at its appraised value.
The city of Grand Island acquired the 156-acre property in 2023, investing $2 million. A comprehensive master plan was subsequently developed, proposing up to $45 million in enhancements, including the expansion of hiking and biking trails, improved river access, and new campgrounds.
Legislative backing for the project came earlier this year when the Nebraska Legislature passed a resolution to merge the camp with the nearby Mormon Island State Recreation Area. This integration aims to create what would become Nebraska’s ninth state park. However, a timeline for the park’s development has yet to be established.
While Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele refrained from making public statements before the council’s decision, he included remarks in the meeting agenda, stating that the initiative will be “truly transformational for our City and for the great State of Nebraska.”
Attempts to obtain comments from Game and Parks officials were unsuccessful.
