Michigan GOP Candidates Persist in Claiming Trump Won 2020 Election

Claims of 2020 Election Fraud Persist Among Michigan GOP Candidates

At a recent gathering, two Republican candidates in Michigan’s gubernatorial race continue to assert that the 2020 presidential election was wrongfully taken from Donald Trump.

During the event held on April 13, reported by the Midland Daily News, state Senator Aric Nesbitt and Representative John James accused Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson of bias. They claimed Benson “put her thumb on the scale” to secure President Joe Biden’s victory in the state. Notably, Benson is a Democrat running for the gubernatorial office.

Nesbitt insisted that “Trump won Michigan” in the 2020 election. James, who was a U.S. Senate candidate at that time, suggested that the election was also manipulated against him.

James questioned the audience, “Who here believes that Jocelyn Benson… screwed Trump in 2020?” He further stated, “Who here believes the president won in 2020? All right, well, if you do, I outperformed President Trump in 2020, and there are five judges that agree with you that Jocelyn Benson had her thumb on the scale in 2020.”

Official results from the 2020 election showed Biden winning Michigan by over 154,000 votes, while Sen. Gary Peters triumphed over James by 92,000 votes.

Despite Trump’s ongoing assertions of election misconduct and widespread voter fraud, numerous legal challenges and independent evaluations have discredited these allegations.

Following the 2020 election, Trump criticized Benson, accusing her of illegally promoting mail-in voting and labeling her as “a rogue Secretary of State.” This accusation fueled gatherings of armed Trump supporters outside Benson’s residence, where they voiced threatening chants.

Benson shared on X, “The individuals gathered outside my home targeted me as Michigan’s chief election officer. But their threats were actually aimed at the 5.5 million Michigan citizens who voted in this fall’s election, seeking to overturn their will. They will not succeed in doing so.”

As the political landscape heats up, James and Nesbitt are preparing for the primary elections scheduled for August 4.
