Amidst the harsh conditions of a winter storm, many drivers would have overlooked a muddy culvert near a Texas highway. However, Douglas Lane, a tow truck driver, did something different.

Lane, while on his route in Seagoville, Texas, noticed a vehicle halted in the roadway. His curiosity led him to investigate the situation further.

Upon stopping, Lane heard cries for help originating from the icy waters of a nearby drainage culvert.

Acting swiftly, Lane approached the culvert, where he discovered a man struggling in the frigid water. Surveillance from a police body camera later captured Lane gripping the man’s hoodie, tirelessly ensuring his head remained above the water.

“He gave up fighting to stay above the water. I said ‘no, you’re not going to do that.'”

Despite the challenge posed by the cold water and the man’s weight, Lane held firm. He promptly contacted emergency services and maintained his grip, even as the man’s strength waned.

Once officers arrived, they formed a human chain, successfully extracting the man from the dangerous culvert. He was transported to a hospital and is reportedly on the mend, according to the police.

Lane’s courageous actions were immediately acknowledged by the responding officers, and local law enforcement leaders credited him with saving the man’s life due to his prompt response.

Nonetheless, Lane seeks no accolades for his deed. Each time he drives past the culvert, he is reminded of the event—not for being hailed as a hero, but because assisting others is his natural inclination.

“I wasn’t trying to get any kind of extra credit,” Lane explained. “I’m just doing what I know best—and that’s helping others.”
