The globally renowned Comedy Wildlife Awards, often hailed as the ‘world’s funniest wildlife photography competition’, has just shared its shortlist, showcasing the amusing and unexpected aspects of the natural world.
Comedy has always hinged on perfect timing, and the nominated entries for this year’s Comedy Wildlife Awards exemplify this principle brilliantly. Beyond their sheer hilarity, these images also offer a novel perspective on wildlife, capturing animals in absurd and unlikely moments. For instance, a dancing gorilla in the wilderness, a seagull defecating on a white-tailed eagle, a grimacing bear, and even a duck that appears to be smoking a cigarette are among the unforgettable snaps that photographers could never have anticipated.
However, the ‘world’s funniest wildlife photography competition’ is not just about the laughs. Ten percent of the profits from this year’s competition are allocated to the Whitley Fund for Nature. Over the past thirty years, this organization has contributed over £24 million to grassroot conservationists dedicated to ‘saving the world’ and preserving our natural habitats.
These delightful photographs, as Stefan Maier of Nikon Europe, the competition’s sponsor, remarked, ‘combine wit and wonder to celebrate nature’s character while emphasizing the urgency of conservation’. These images not only evoke joy but also remind us of the importance of protecting the natural world.
Tom Sullam, co-founder of the Comedy Wildlife Awards, reported that this year’s edition attracted a record-breaking number of entries. This increased participation, he noted, helps raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and highlights the fundamental role that wildlife plays in our planet and our lives.
This announcement follows the recent unveiling of the finalists for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award by London’s Natural History Museum. Both competitions have seen a surge in entries, which reflects a growing interest in the natural world.
The winners of the Comedy Wildlife Awards will be revealed on December 9th at a London event, followed by a short exhibition at the Oxo Gallery from December 10th to 14th, featuring all the finalists. The People’s Choice Award will be open for public voting from December 10th until March 1st, 2026, with the winner being announced on March 12th.
