A 22-year-old woman and her 8-month-old child are on the mend after their minivan ended up in Dickinson Bayou late Thursday evening. The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. on FM 517, according to reports.

The mother recounted to emergency personnel that she hit a curb while crossing a bridge, which led her to lose control, sending her vehicle across multiple lanes and into the bayou. The situation could have been dire, yet fortune intervened in the form of a nearby bystander.

Witnesses reported that a homeless man living in the woods by the bayou saw the crash. He quickly used his canoe to reach the sinking minivan, successfully saving the woman and her baby, and transporting them safely to the shore. Dickinson police were on-site by the time they made it to land.

The Dickinson Volunteer Fire Department was also involved, deploying their boat to ferry a tow truck operator to the submerged vehicle, allowing it to be retrieved from the water.

The mother and her child were examined at the University of Texas Medical Branch in League City as a precautionary step. Authorities later announced their release from the hospital, assuring the public that both were doing well. Investigators verified that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the accident, and that the infant was securely fastened in a car seat.

The Dickinson Police Department issued a statement praising the anonymous Good Samaritan for his “quick and selfless actions,” with officials recognizing him as a hero.
