Staff Sgt. Ruben Tala of the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Travis Air Force Base, was traveling with his family when he witnessed an SUV spin out, leaving it precariously positioned hundreds of feet above the ground. Without hesitation, Tala sprang into action.

Tala described the moment to KCRA 3, attributing his immediate response to adrenaline: “During that time, I mean, I think it’s the adrenaline kicking in.”

Footage shared by KCRA 3 shows Tala gripping the SUV’s door as it dangled on the edge. Despite the danger, Tala’s thoughts were with his own family nearby, prompting him to act quickly.

“I thought about my wife and my daughter,” Tala stated. “What if there’s a family in that car? Somebody has to help.”

Several bystanders joined Tala, working together to stabilize the vehicle. Their combined efforts successfully helped the driver and his wife to safely exit. The woman, visibly shaken, clung to the couple’s two dogs.

Reflecting on the incident, Tala noted a poignant coincidence. “One of their dog’s names is Luna, which is my daughter’s name,” he remarked. “I was like, how’s that a coincidence, right?”

Tala was traveling with his wife, Yvett, and their 22-month-old daughter, en route to enjoy the holiday in the snow when the crash occurred.

In acknowledgment of the couple’s bravery, Lt. Col. Jason Christie, commander of the 60th Force Support Squadron, commended their actions. “SSgt Tala and Yvett’s quick action and courage are a direct reflection of our Core Value of Service Before Self,” Christie declared. “We’re so proud to have them as our teammates and to witness them ready to help anyone in need.”
