Greensboro to Enhance Traffic Safety with Red Light Cameras
In an effort to bolster traffic safety and monitor vehicular activity, Greensboro is set to introduce red light cameras at select city intersections. The initiative is part of a $1.6 million contract awarded to NovoaGlobal, a company based in Florida, which will oversee the implementation of the cameras over several years. Five intersections are slated for the initial rollout, though these locations have yet to be determined.
According to Hanna Cockburn, Greensboro’s Transportation Director, the city conducted a thorough analysis of intersections with the highest incidents of severe crashes, including those resulting in fatalities or serious injuries. The five intersections chosen for the camera installations will be those anticipated to benefit most from enhanced monitoring.
“There’s quite a body of research around the use and deployment of red light cameras,” Cockburn stated. “They do demonstrate a reduction in crashes and a reduction in fatalities overall. So that was really our motivation for selecting this program and recommending to city council that we move forward with it.”
The cameras are expected to be operational by spring. Drivers caught violating traffic signals at these intersections will face a $50 fine, though no criminal charges will be imposed for these infractions.
