Greensboro Expands Cooling Centers to Combat Summer Heat
As the summer heat intensifies, Greensboro is stepping up its efforts to provide relief for its residents. The city has announced the opening of a weekend cooling center to help locals stay cool during the hottest months of the year.
Starting June 6, the Interactive Resource Center (IRC) on East Washington Street will serve as a weekend haven for those seeking respite from the heat. It will welcome visitors every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., continuing through the end of August.
During the weekdays, the IRC already functions as a cooling center, operating Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the IRC, the Tiny House Community Development HOPE Center will be open on weekdays until noon, while Glenwood Together will provide cooling services from noon to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Thursdays.
The IRC has also made provisions to operate overnight when daytime temperatures soar to 90 degrees or higher and nighttime temperatures remain above 70. This measure ensures that residents have a safe place to stay cool even in extreme heat conditions.
