Stokes County Planning Board Suggests Development Pause for Data Centers
In response to growing community concerns, the Stokes County Planning Board has advised a temporary halt on the establishment of data centers. The board’s decision, passed by a 6-1 vote, highlights the necessity for additional time to address environmental and safety issues raised by local residents.
This proposed pause could significantly affect the progression of Project Delta, a controversial hyperscale data center planned for Walnut Cove.
However, the final decision rests with the county commissioners, who have the authority to approve or reject the moratorium. Previously, they overruled the planning board’s recommendations regarding Project Delta, sanctioning a zoning alteration that was subsequently nullified following legal opposition. The developer is currently reapplying for permission.
The commissioners are scheduled to deliberate on the moratorium proposal in their upcoming meeting on Monday at 6 p.m.
