First Video Podcast: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Behind the scenes of the first Positive News video podcast

Turning an idea into a thought-provoking podcast brings along various fascinating discussions. This is something the small yet agile team at Positive News has experienced while creating their first video podcast, a task both exciting and challenging.

After the podcast idea was proposed, the team, fueled by support from sponsor Triodos Bank, embarked on a journey to define what their Positive News podcast should embody. Their intent was not to create just another leadership series or an ethical entrepreneurship guide. They wanted to carve out a platform for genuine, thought-provoking conversations with individuals trying to instill purpose into their practice, despite its complexities.

The recently released second episode of The Purpose Pioneers features guest Keith Bradbury, co-founder of Ember, the first all-electric intercity bus company in the UK.

The podcast idea that materialized aims to facilitate conversations with leaders who are reshaping the realms of business, community, and culture. The discussions are centered not around their professional achievements but on the defining moments of their journeys, including successes, doubts, compromises, and turning points that typically remain untold in public narratives. The Purpose Pioneers podcast has now launched, featuring intimate conversations with founders and CEOs from diverse sectors such as nature restoration, ethical finance, disability inclusion, and consumer goods. New episodes are released every Tuesday until 17 February.

Reflecting on the podcast-making experience, the team recognizes that simple structures lead to richer conversations. The team initially experimented with complex interview structures, but they soon felt overdone. Hence, each interview was anchored around three key moments that defined the guest’s journey. This minimalist approach contributed to engagingly focused conversations without restricting anyone.

All interviews were recorded remotely, which allowed accessibility to guests who might have been otherwise hard to reach. This remote recording setup was surprising but liberating, leading to more attentive listening, instinctive responses, and comfortable silences.

The team found that open and authentic conversations are best facilitated when guests are given the freedom to talk. This upfront clarity enabled the team to ask personal questions without catching the guest off guard. The guests, including CEOs and executives, engaged generously with this openness, contributing to insightful conversations.

Despite the pressures of their roles, the guests demonstrated their resilience by finding joy in outdoor activities like surfing, rock climbing, and listening to bird songs. These seemingly small acts help them maintain balance and make their ambitious work sustainable.

The Purpose Pioneers is now available on all major podcast platforms.
