In Pensacola, Florida, a man’s habitual meal order turned into an unexpected alert when he missed a visit to his favorite eatery.

For almost a decade, 78-year-old Charlie Hicks maintained a steadfast routine at the Shrimp Basket, visiting twice daily for lunch and dinner. His order never varied: a cup of gumbo, light on the rice, no cracker. Staff had grown accustomed to preparing his meal without needing to ask.

It was a significant change when Hicks suddenly stopped showing up, prompting immediate concern.

Chef Donell Stallworth noticed Hicks’ absence as the restaurant opened its doors. After several days without seeing Hicks, Stallworth’s instincts led him to investigate further. During his shift, he drove to Hicks’ apartment to ensure his well-being.

On arrival, Stallworth’s knocks went unanswered at first, but he was about to leave when he heard a faint call for help.

Inside the apartment, Stallworth discovered Hicks on the floor, suffering from dehydration and two broken ribs. It was unclear how long Hicks had been incapacitated, but the chef’s timely intervention likely saved his life.

While Hicks was treated at the hospital, his connection to the Shrimp Basket remained strong.

Employees consistently delivered his beloved gumbo during his hospital stay, offering comfort and familiarity. Once he was discharged, the restaurant’s staff played a crucial role in his transition back to daily life. They assisted Hicks in moving to a new apartment conveniently located next to the restaurant, ensuring they could visit him regularly. Additionally, they helped outfit his home with necessary appliances and repairs to make it safe and welcoming.

Three months post-incident, Hicks was back at the Shrimp Basket, where he is considered part of the family.

As Chef Stallworth described, “He’s that uncle. He’s that grandfather. He’s that best friend. He’s all in one.”
