In a heartfelt gesture, the owner of a Bronx pizzeria is reaching out to individuals in need by providing them with a warm meal, no strings attached.
The note displayed at D’Romano’s Pizza
Daniel Romano, the proprietor of D’Romano’s Pizza, was moved to action after witnessing a woman retrieving food from the establishment’s trash. Instead of ignoring the situation, Romano chose to intervene, inviting her inside.
“I grabbed her by the hand and I led her to the pizzeria,” Romano recounted. “I went into the oven and I got her a fresh slice.”
The woman, overwhelmed with emotion, began to cry. Romano reassured her, emphasizing that there was no shame in accepting help. “I don’t want you eating out of the garbage,” he told her.
This encounter left a lasting impression on Romano, prompting him to ensure others in similar predicaments wouldn’t have to resort to searching through trash for sustenance.
To formalize his offer, Romano placed a handwritten sign outside his restaurant that reads:
“To the people eating out of the garbage, I have more love for you than you think. Please tell me you’re hungry, I will give you a slice of pizza.”
The initiative is straightforward—any individual who is hungry can enter and receive a free slice of pizza along with water.
Romano’s benevolence extended far beyond his local community. As news of his actions spread, he began receiving calls from across the nation. Individuals, many of whom had never met Romano, expressed their desire to contribute financially to his cause, ensuring that more people could enjoy a hot meal.
What commenced as a singular act of compassion with one woman and one slice of pizza has blossomed into a larger communal effort aimed at eradicating hunger.
Beyond the free pizza, Romano’s initiative serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of treating everyone with respect and dignity.
While a hot meal can satisfy physical hunger, the kindness accompanying it can nurture the soul.
