Lawrence County Fire and Rescue reported receiving alerts about a house fire just before 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 19. When emergency crews arrived, the situation was dire as a wooden house was engulfed in flames, threatening other nearby structures, including a mobile home situated less than 20 feet away.

Before the arrival of the first responders, a young resident made a crucial 911 call:

Caller: “We do have an injured.”

Dispatcher: “Okay, one of you is injured? Everybody’s out of the house, but somebody’s injured?”

Caller: “Yes, ma’am.”

Dispatcher: “How bad are they injured?”

Caller: “She has severe burns on her neck. She’s 72 and she’s crippled.”

Dispatcher: “And she’s crippled?”

Caller: “Yes, ma’am.”

Tyler McDow, director of Lawrence County Fire and Rescue, confirmed that an elderly woman, hindered by limited mobility, managed to escape the blaze with the aid of a 12-year-old relative who risked her own safety.

Initial reports indicate that the young girl successfully rescued the senior from the burning residence, while another sibling contacted 911.

“That child made a decision to help somebody out of the house that some adults would have trouble overcoming the fear. Obviously, she sustained some burns in doing so, so that tells you that the conditions inside the residence were very dangerous at the time, and so, obviously, she had to make the decision that somebody else’s life was more important than hers.”

Both the elderly woman and the brave child received immediate medical attention on-site before being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for further treatment.

Officials reported that the senior woman suffered significant burns but remains in stable condition, while the 12-year-old incurred minor burns to her limbs.

In a statement, the fire department acknowledged the girl’s valiant efforts, noting, “We are thankful for the actions of the child on scene at the time of the discovery of the fire. Her heroic efforts quite possibly saved a life this morning.”
