Bezos Fund Boosts Nebraska Housing Project with $1.25M Grant

Grand Island housing project gets $1.25 million from Amazon founder

Major Funding Secured for Nebraska Housing Initiative

A Nebraska housing initiative has captured significant attention with substantial backing from a prominent global figure.

Hope Harbor, a nonprofit organization situated in Grand Island, recently disclosed receiving a $1.25 million grant from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund, which is part of Jeff Bezos’ $2 billion philanthropic venture.

The executive director of Hope Harbor, Liz Mayfield, outlined the intended use of this funding. It will support the management of the Lighthouse Apartments, a 20-unit development poised to be central Nebraska’s inaugural permanent supportive housing facility. This initiative aims to help families establish a rental history while benefiting from ongoing support services.

“We still get to continue to provide budgeting help, case management, mental health services – all the things that we do as part of our programming – that continues once they’re in their own unit,” Mayfield explained. “So they get to build out their own rental history and their own credit history in addition to continuing to get services they need to get back on their feet.”

The construction of this $10.7 million project is anticipated to begin in the coming spring, according to Mayfield.

In the previous year, Hope Harbor secured $5.8 million from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development for this project. Mayfield mentioned in a September interview with Nebraska Public Media News that these funds not only covered over half of the project’s total cost but also inspired private investors to contribute.
