Gwen Whittle spent an impressive 71 years married to her husband, James. The pair crossed paths in 1952 when Gwen relocated from North Wales to Liverpool to pursue a teaching career. They wed in 1956 and enjoyed a long, happy marriage until James’s passing in September, aged 93.
“He made me laugh. He was still making me laugh up until the very end,” Gwen shared with the Liverpool Echo.
Continuing a beloved tradition, Gwen decided to visit Toby Carvery on Boxing Day, a place she and James often enjoyed together, even though she was alone this year.
To keep her late husband’s memory close, Gwen reserved a table for one and brought along a cherished photograph of the two during happier times to place on the table.
“I took a photograph of the two of us in happy times and put it on the table for company, so we would be together,” she explained.
The day took a heartening turn when Gwen was seated near two large family gatherings. A young woman from one of the tables extended an invitation to join them, which Gwen declined, not wanting to intrude on their family celebration. When Gwen later requested her bill, she discovered a benevolent stranger had already covered the cost of her meal.
“I said it was terribly generous but can’t let you,” Gwen recounted. The kind woman responded, “I’ve been looking for someone to give a Christmas present to — someone who looks like they want cheering up.” Touched by the gesture, Gwen admitted, “I had a little cry. It was very generous.”
By sharing her story with the Liverpool Echo, Gwen hopes to highlight how even simple acts of kindness can transform a lonely day into one filled with warmth and hope.
