Joe Symonds, hailing from Vancouver, Washington, embarked on delivering food through DoorDash for over a year to supplement his income and afford essential medications. However, a recent delivery took an unexpected twist as he mistakenly arrived at the wrong house.
This address belonged to Alyona Dikiy, who was sorting through her garage when she noticed Symonds looked slightly confused. Their brief conversation revealed to her surprise that Symonds, at 87, was enduring long hours as a delivery driver.
“You couldn’t imagine that being your own grandpa or grandma doing that,” Dikiy remarked to KGW News.
Symonds shared the challenges he faced, admitting that the physical demands of the job, such as climbing stairs and handling deliveries, had led to some painful falls, despite his appreciation for the work.
Motivated by his plight, Dikiy generously handed him $100 and suggested taking the rest of the day off. Her support didn’t end there.
With Symonds’ consent, Dikiy launched a GoFundMe campaign, aiming to gather enough funds to alleviate his financial troubles and hopefully enable his retirement.
Initially, the donation flow was slow.
“Once it was at $400, I was like, ‘Joe, we’re at like $400! You can take a couple days off!’” Dikiy recounted.
However, the fundraiser soon gained momentum.
Contributions poured in from across the globe, quickly surpassing $40,000, leaving both Symonds and Dikiy astounded by the outpouring of kindness.
“I think you’re the kindest, most fantastic people that I could imagine,” Symonds expressed. “I never thought there were people like that — people who would donate to a complete stranger they had never met.”
For Dikiy, the initiative reaffirmed her belief in the widespread presence of compassion.
“I think that a lot of people have really good hearts,” she stated.
Symonds feels his accidental delivery mishap was serendipitous.
“She’s my angel,” he described.
