Georgia’s Battle with Identity Theft: A Deep Dive into Rising Risks
Identity theft is a growing concern across the United States, with Georgia emerging as one of the most affected states. Recent findings shed light on the severity of this issue, particularly in the Peach State.
According to a report by the personal finance website WalletHub, American consumers experienced losses nearing $12.5 billion due to fraud in the past year. Alarmingly, Georgia ranks as the third most vulnerable state for identity theft and fraud incidents. Analyst Chip Lupo emphasizes the need for better protective measures.
Lupo points out, “States who don’t have laws on the books, such as identity theft passbook programs,” which are designed to safeguard victims from legal repercussions. He further explains, “What that is, that shields identity theft victims from any type of law enforcement action, it protects you from any type of prosecution. A lot of states don’t have those types of laws, data disposal laws, or even statewide cybersecurity task forces.”
Alarmingly, consumer losses attributed to fraud surged by 25% compared to the previous year, highlighting the escalating threat that individuals face.
