Former UGA Athlete Sentenced for RaceTrac Employee Murder
In a case that has drawn significant attention, Akhil Crumpton, a former University of Georgia football player, has been handed a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The verdict was delivered by the Oconee County Superior Court, concluding a series of legal proceedings that began with a tragic incident in 2021.
Crumpton was found guilty of killing Elijah Wood during a robbery at a RaceTrac gas station in Watkinsville, Georgia. The fatal shooting occurred while Wood was on duty at the station. The same firearm used in this crime linked Crumpton to a separate shooting in Philadelphia, leading to his arrest.
The jury’s decision on Wednesday included convictions on all six charges against Crumpton, such as felony murder and illegal possession of a firearm. The state court’s judgment follows a previous federal conviction in 2024 connected to Wood’s death, for which Crumpton received a 30-year prison sentence with an additional three years of supervised release.
With the state court’s recent ruling, Crumpton’s sentence now includes life imprisonment without parole, plus an extra five years. This case remains a somber reminder of the consequences of violent crime and has left a lasting impact on the community.
