Planning Commission Rejects Rezoning Proposal for UGA President’s House

The Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission recently voted on a significant rezoning request, impacting the future of the University of Georgia President’s House. The proposal sought to change the zoning from government to commercial neighborhood, a decision that has sparked considerable debate.

The motion concluded with a decisive outcome: “A yes vote is in support of the denial.” “Yes, is support of denial, yes.” “Five yes, one no. Motion passes.”

Initially reviewed in September, Capstone Property Group had submitted a revised plan, scaling down their original hotel proposal substantially. Lori Bork Newcomer emphasized their intentions: “We’ve listened to the feedback, and we’re here tonight with a much smaller hotel,” she explained. “It’ll allow the preservation of the President’s home and welcome people into the home for decades to come.”

While some, like David Bradley, advocated for the development, arguing, “We just have opportunities in front of us and I’m here to offer support for this project. We need this property; we need more rooms in Athens,” the majority present at the meeting voiced strong opposition.

Jasmine Paul, among the dissenters, expressed appreciation for the decision, stating, “I appreciate staff’s recommendation to deny this proposal.”
