Flu Season Alert: Vaccination, Hygiene Key to Preventing Illness

Flu season sees high hospital visits in Washoe County

Flu Season Prompts Health Advisory in Northern Nevada

As flu season intensifies in Northern Nevada, health officials are urging residents to take precautions. Dr. Danika Williams, an epidemiologist at Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH), reported that flu cases recently comprised one-tenth of emergency room and urgent care visits.

“People still need to be thinking: this is flu season. There’s a lot of sick people. So, get vaccinated, hand wash, stay home when you’re sick, and really think about those around you,” advised Williams. She emphasized that the elderly, individuals with underlying health conditions, and young children are particularly vulnerable.

Flu vaccinations are generally covered by insurance, but NNPH offers free shots without the need for an appointment for those without insurance. Residents experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, low oxygen levels, or confusion should seek medical attention, according to Williams. She noted the importance of early treatment, saying, “If you are sick, call your doctor for the flu. There is treatment, and if you get it within the first 48 hours, that is your best chance of actually stopping the virus from replicating or making you sicker.”

With the University of Nevada, Reno’s spring semester about to begin, another surge in flu cases is anticipated, reminiscent of the rise seen when K-12 students returned to school. To help residents make informed decisions about attending public events, Washoe County provides a respiratory illness dashboard through NNPH.
