Nebraska Welcomes Its First Kid Governor: A Fifth Grader’s Path to Leadership
In an unprecedented event, Nebraska has elected its inaugural kid governor, Charlie Couch, a dedicated fifth grader from Meadow Elementary in Ralston. Charlie emerged victorious in the statewide election held this month, running on a campaign committed to increasing awareness for cancer support programs benefiting both children and adults.
Throughout her one-year term, Charlie will collaborate with Civic Nebraska, a nonprofit organization, to advance her advocacy platform. Alongside her, a cabinet consisting of the six other finalists from the election will assist her in achieving her campaign objectives.
The official swearing-in ceremony for this historic group is scheduled to take place at the Nebraska State Capitol on January 13, 2026.
The Nebraska Kid Governor initiative marks the state’s first venture into a hands-on civics education program. Unlike traditional mock elections, this program aims to actively engage students in understanding state governance, the voting process, and community leadership.
This innovative program originated from the Connecticut Democracy Center and has been implemented in various states, including Oklahoma, Oregon, and New Hampshire, before reaching Nebraska.
To qualify for the election, students were tasked with identifying community issues, researching potential solutions, and crafting comprehensive campaign platforms, which they presented via video. Schools then nominated one candidate to proceed to the next stage.
A panel of judges evaluated these nominees and selected seven finalists. Subsequently, fifth-grade classes throughout Nebraska cast their votes in early November after reviewing the candidates’ proposals.
