Leadership Transition at Wilkes University Amid Financial Challenges

Wilkes University is set to undergo a significant leadership change as President Greg Cant announces his retirement plans scheduled for August of next year. This decision emerges during a period where the university is addressing a budget shortfall and facing demands for greater transparency from its student body.

Greg Cant, who has helmed Wilkes University since 2020, has decided to step down, prompting immediate adjustments in the institution’s leadership structure. David Ward, previously the senior vice president and provost, will now assume the role of chief operating officer and provost, taking on some of Cant’s responsibilities.

In recent months, Cant’s administration has faced scrutiny, particularly as the university navigates the financial strains exacerbated by an $8 million budget deficit. Concerns have been raised by the student community regarding potential measures to balance the budget, which might include tuition hikes or program cuts. On November 25, students organized a protest outside the president’s office, demanding clarity and accountability.

Despite these challenges, the university issued a statement describing its financial standing as “strong” while acknowledging the necessity of aligning revenue and expenses. The administration emphasized its commitment to addressing the budgetary imbalance.

As Cant prepares to conclude his tenure, he will concentrate on enhancing Wilkes’ philanthropic strategies and boosting fundraising initiatives, which are crucial for reinforcing the institution’s financial stability and strategic goals. This was highlighted in a statement by Bill Miller, chair of the board of trustees.

Concurrently, David Ward will direct his efforts towards ensuring the operational efficiency of the university. His expanded oversight will include managing several associate vice presidents and the interim chief financial officer.

The process to identify the next president of Wilkes University is expected to commence before the holiday season, as stated by Miller. Further updates on the transition and search process will be provided as they become available.
