University of Michigan Maintains Strong Global Standing in Latest QS Rankings
Continuing its tradition of academic excellence, the University of Michigan (U-M) has been prominently featured in the QS World University Rankings 2027, unveiled on June 18. This institution, known for its robust research capabilities, has secured the 51st spot globally among 1,504 universities, placing it within the top 3.4% of universities worldwide.
In the United States, U-M ranks 15th among 184 participating institutions, making it the third highest-ranked public university in the nation. The University of California, Berkeley, takes the lead as the top public university.
U-M’s impressive performance is predominantly attributed to its academic excellence, with additional strengths in graduate employability and a wide array of international research collaborations. The university’s high scores in academic reputation and employer reputation align with evidence supporting the value of a U-M degree.
The QS rankings assess universities based on nine criteria:
- Academic reputation (30%)
- Employer reputation (15%)
- Employability (5%)
- Faculty-student ratio (10%)
- Citations per faculty (20%)
- Proportion of international faculty (5%)
- Proportion of international students (5%)
- International research collaboration (5%)
- Sustainability (5%)
U-M’s global influence is further highlighted by its recognition as a leading producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars. Since the inception of the Fulbright Program, the university has been awarded over 600 U.S. scholar awards and more than 1,000 U.S. student awards, according to the International Institute Fellowships & Grants Office.

The university’s international appeal is evident, with 2,658 international undergraduate students enrolled in fall 2025. U-M caters to nearly 19,000 in-state undergraduates across all 83 counties of Michigan. Impressively, over 60% of these local students graduate debt-free, supported by initiatives like the Go Blue Guarantee, offering free tuition and fees for families with incomes and assets up to $125,000.
U-M alumni significantly contribute to Michigan’s economy, with more than 124,000 graduates employed across the state, many at Fortune 500 companies and other key organizations.
