The University of Michigan is opening its doors to groundbreaking ideas, inviting faculty and staff to dream big and apply for a share of an impressive $1 billion funding initiative. This substantial investment aims to transform innovative concepts into reality, supporting projects that promise significant societal impact.
In an ambitious move outlined during his November State of the University address, President Domenico Grasso announced U-M’s long-term commitment to inject $1 billion over a decade into initiatives that align with the university’s mission and have the potential to create transformative societal changes.
This funding is accessible through the Strategic Initiative Fund, which allocates one-time financial resources for projects of various scales that demonstrate high value and impact. Faculty and staff across the university’s three campuses and Michigan Medicine are encouraged to propose initiatives that embody institutional value, social impact, and innovative solutions to complex problems.

The SIF seeks to fast-track ideas that align with the university’s vision, aiming for both broad and deep impacts. Grasso emphasized the importance of developing bold solutions in the face of current challenges in higher education. “We must not compromise the potential of the future for the exigency of the present. We are calling on our community to submit their best ideas,” Grasso stated. “The world’s brightest minds surround us on all three campuses, and together we can be more strategic and disciplined than ever about our finances. The answer is thinking differently.”
Funding through the SIF is categorized into three tiers, offering awards of up to $500,000, $1 million, and $5 million. The fund is specifically designed to support proposals that:
- Foster high-priority institutional transformation aligned with the Look to Michigan vision.
- Enhance research, teaching, and service impact in the vision’s designated areas and commitments.
- Create effective interdisciplinary collaborations for comprehensive problem-solving across university units and campuses.
- Target high-impact opportunities offering significant value to the U-M community and society at large.
Provost Laurie McCauley highlighted the strategic nature of this investment, stating, “Strong institutions invest in their people, especially during challenging times. The Strategic Initiative Fund represents a deliberate choice about where to invest when resources are constrained and innovation remains a core value. With this fund, we are looking to our community to elevate areas of great promise in continuing to deliver on our mission and fortify our future.”
Initial efforts supporting the Look to Michigan vision include the Faculty Expansion Program and Impact Institutes. The first annual application window is open until February 9, 2026, inviting proposals that will undergo review by a panel of internal and external experts. Decisions on funding will be announced in March 2026.
