UGA Urges Students to Return Home Ahead of Approaching Winter Storm

UGA advises students to return home ahead of winter storm

As a significant winter storm looms near Athens, the University of Georgia has proactively reached out to students, suggesting they consider heading home after classes on Friday. The call to action, sent via the UGA Alert system on Thursday night, aims to ensure student safety in light of the forecasted severe weather conditions.

The incoming storm is expected to bring a hazardous mix of rain, sleet, hail, and snow to the area. With predictions of substantial ice accumulation, strong winds, and temperatures dropping below freezing, the university has warned of the potential for dangerous driving conditions and widespread power outages.

Although the university’s housing facilities will remain open, there is a concern that power outages or water line issues could necessitate moving students to temporary accommodations. As a precautionary step, the university is advising students to return home if they can.

Essential services such as dining halls and Campus Transit are set to continue operating, depending on weather conditions.

While a final decision has not been reached, the alert indicated a probable closure of the university on Monday, January 26. Officials are closely monitoring the storm’s progression and plan to release further updates by Sunday afternoon.

The alert, also disseminated via email, encouraged the university community to verify their emergency contact information to ensure they receive all critical updates.
