University of Georgia Excels in Study Abroad Programs
The University of Georgia (UGA) has gained national recognition for its outstanding study abroad programs, as highlighted in a recent analysis. The institution ranks first for short-term study abroad involvement and holds the fifth spot overall, according to the 2025 Open Doors Report. In the past academic year, UGA facilitated international experiences for over 3,000 students.
Gary Baker, who leads UGA en España, expressed little surprise at these findings, noting the university’s consistent performance in this area. “There have been a lot of efforts made over the last 15-20 years to try to provide some kind of study away experience to all of our students,” Baker commented.
The benefits of studying abroad, such as improved language skills and heightened cultural understanding, are well-documented. Baker emphasizes that the most profound impact can be seen in student feedback. “When you see someone saying over and over again, this was the best summer of my life, or this was a life-changing experience, without wanting to take that too far and sound too grandiose, you know that you are participating in something that is, as I said before, I think enriching students’ lives and their perspective on the world,” he remarked.
In a bid to expand opportunities, UGA plans to increase its faculty-led study abroad programs from 115 to 154 next year.
