The University of Michigan is set for a transition in its communications leadership as Richie Hunter, who has been instrumental in steering the university’s messaging strategies, will step down from her role on January 2, 2026. Her successor, albeit temporarily, will be Ken Kettenbeil, a senior advisor to the president.

Hunter’s tenure as the university’s chief communications officer has been marked by significant achievements and challenges. She oversaw the comprehensive communications and marketing functions of the university, serving as a key advisor to President Domenico Grasso. “Richie has served the university with integrity and distinction,” Grasso remarked. “She has skillfully navigated complex challenges while leading communications across our institution.”

Throughout her time at U-M, Hunter has managed an extensive communications portfolio. This includes executive and presidential communications, public affairs, and several university publications and digital strategies. Her efforts have not only fortified the university’s local reputation but have extended its influence nationally and internationally. President Grasso noted that her leadership in launching the national Look to Michigan media campaign has been pivotal in highlighting the university’s global impact and dedication to public service.

Hunter’s career prior to joining U-M is notable for her roles at the University of Oregon and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she revamped communications strategies and branding efforts. Her experience extends beyond academia, with over a decade in high-level marketing and communications roles within the healthcare sector.

Ken Kettenbeil, who will take over as interim vice president for communications starting January 3, 2026, comes with a rich background in external relations. His previous experience includes a 15-year stint as vice chancellor for external relations at UM-Dearborn, where he was responsible for communications, marketing, and government relations. Kettenbeil also held roles in communications and marketing with Smart USA, the Detroit Super Bowl XL Host Committee, and the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Richie Hunter’s academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Southern California and a Master of Science degree in business administration from Lamar University.

As U-M prepares for this leadership transition, stakeholders are keenly watching how the communications landscape will evolve under the interim leadership of Kettenbeil and eventually a permanent successor.
