Rising Influence of Nonpartisan Voters in Northern Nevada’s Political Landscape
For the first time in history, nonpartisan voter registrations have outnumbered those of the two major political parties — Republicans and Democrats — in 2023. This shift is increasingly significant as the gap continues to widen by hundreds of thousands of voters. The key question now is how these nonpartisan voters will affect the 2026 Election, particularly in Northern Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, a seat that has become competitive for the first time in 15 years after Congressman Mark Amodei announced his retirement. Candidates for CD2 and the Nevada governor’s race are now tasked with adapting their platforms to appeal to this burgeoning voter demographic.
These issues, among others, are explored in the latest August episode of Purple Politics Nevada, hosted by Lucia Starbuck. The episode features a roundtable discussion with several notable guests: John Rice, a Great Basin College arts and humanities professor; Marcy Kupfersmith, a Sparks renter and senior services advocate; Mike Escobar, a Reno resident and Marine Corps veteran; and Fred Lokken, a political science and history professor at Truckee Community College.
