Nebraska Governor’s Budget Sparks Debate Over Education, DEI Policies

State senators react to Pillen's upbeat picture in State of State speech

Debate Over Nebraska’s Education and University Budget Proposals

Nebraska’s legislative session has kicked off with significant debates on education and university funding. Senator Terrell McKinney has voiced strong opposition to Governor Pillen’s recent proposal concerning school suspensions and university budget allocations. McKinney urged schools to adopt alternative disciplinary measures, expressing concerns over the disproportionate suspensions of minority students. “I just think it’s a shame. I think it’s also failing to recognize that there was a huge disproportionate amount of suspensions pertaining to black kids and other minority kids in our state, and we’re going back to that,” McKinney stated.

Governor Pillen’s budget plan also targets the University of Nebraska’s spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, which he criticizes as aligning with what he terms the “woke ivory tower” culture of coastal schools. He questioned, “How destructive would it be if our great University of Nebraska followed the same path that so called ‘elite’ coastal schools have, embracing pronoun culture, DEI discrimination, anti semitism and radical critical race theory invasion into their curriculum?”

While Pillen called for legislative unity and a collaborative spirit, Senator Conrad expressed disappointment, suggesting the governor’s speech lacked concrete policy solutions for Nebraska’s urgent needs. “It seemed to be really, really light on specific policy proposals that were grounded in the most pressing needs of Nebraska and Nebraska families. It seemed rather to be kind of a free-for-all buffet of right wing radical talking points and divisive culture war issues,” Conrad commented.

The Nebraska Legislature now faces the task of deliberating which aspects of the governor’s budget and policy suggestions to implement or discard.
