Matt Campbell Named Penn State’s 17th Head Football Coach

Matt Campbell officially Penn State's head football coach with $78.5M contract

In a heartfelt announcement, Matt Campbell has been appointed as the 17th head football coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions, marking a new chapter in his career. His emotional response highlighted his commitment to the team and the significance of the role.

Campbell expressed his passion for the new position, saying, “If we were ever to leave Iowa State, I wanted to go somewhere and I wanted to finish my career and I wanted to stand for something that’s bigger than Matt Campbell. It’s not about me, but about the players and represent something bigger than myself. And I found that,” during a press conference on Monday.

The decision to bring Campbell on board came after a strong connection with Penn State Athletic Director Pat Kraft, who remarked about their immediate rapport. “I was banging my head against the wall. Like, why did it take so long for us to find each other? He was perfect. And we connected on so many levels. And I woke my wife up, I woke Betsy up, and I said, ‘Oh my God, he’s the guy,'” Kraft shared.

With a contract valued at $78.5 million over eight years, Campbell will start earning $8 million in 2026, with an increase to $9.25 million annually by the contract’s conclusion. Added benefits include a $1 million bonus for a College Football Playoff championship win, private jet access, two vehicles, and various postseason and academic incentives.

The transition entails a $2 million contract buyout to Iowa State by the university. As Campbell prepares for his new role, he emphasized the importance of fostering strong connections with the team by planning to meet each player individually.

While Campbell gears up for his new responsibilities, interim coach Terry Smith will lead Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl against Clemson on Dec. 27, marking his final game before Campbell steps in.
