Renowned Endocrinologist and Educator, Sumer Belbez Pek, Passes Away at 92
Sumer Belbez Pek, a distinguished figure in medicine and education, passed away on May 24, 2026, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Known for his pioneering work in endocrinology and his dedication to academic leadership, Pek left an indelible mark on the medical community.
Born on August 17, 1933, in Ankara, Türkiye, Pek pursued his M.D. and Ph.D. at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany. His journey in the field of medicine took a significant turn when he moved to Michigan in 1960, where he embarked on a remarkable career in medicine, research, and academia.

Pek is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Marilyn (Mickey) Katz-Pek, and their family—including children Jeff (Katy) Pek, Brant (Sandy) Cohn, Debbie (Eric) Keipper, and Paul (Ronda) Pek. His legacy continues through his grandchildren Jenna, Andrew, Curtis, Christyn, Alexis, Sydney, Kyle, and Kaden, alongside numerous cousins and extended relatives worldwide.
At the University of Michigan Medical School, he rose to the rank of professor emeritus, focusing on diabetes and endocrine disorders. Pek’s research, encompassing insulin secretion, pancreatic islet biology, and hormone regulation, has been featured in prominent medical journals, earning him numerous accolades, such as awards from Türkiye’s Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBİTAK) and the Nokta Science Award.
Beyond his scientific endeavors, Pek held key university leadership roles. Notably, he chaired the Institutional Review Board for the Use of Human Subjects in Research, maintaining high ethical standards in clinical and biomedical research. Respected for his intellect, integrity, and mentorship, Pek was beloved by peers, students, and patients alike.
A champion of cultural ties, he co-founded the Turkish American Cultural Association of Michigan (TACAM), promoting Turkish heritage and community within Michigan. His ties to Türkiye remained strong through lectures, mentorship, and collaborative efforts, alongside support for family and friends.
Sumer’s love for travel and discovery enriched his family life, inspiring his children and grandchildren through shared global adventures. His curiosity about culture, history, and traditions was a legacy he passed on.
In his last months, Pek was tenderly cared for by his wife and dedicated caregivers, whose compassion provided solace to him and his family—an appreciation held in high regard.
Remembered for his kindness, intellectual rigor, and humility, Sumer’s influence spans those he mentored and inspired.
