Timothy Evans Arrested in Connection to Downtown Athens Incident
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has made progress in a case involving a potential sexual assault that occurred in downtown Athens on August 21. A 49-year-old local, Timothy Evans, faces charges for financial transaction card theft, fraud, and identity fraud linked to the incident. The police have indicated that further charges may be forthcoming as their investigation continues.
Authorities were alerted to the situation on August 21 when they responded to a report at a local hospital concerning a possible sexual assault near City Hall in Athens. According to the police report, a 20-year-old University of Georgia student recounted her last memory of socializing with friends in downtown Athens around midnight on the previous Thursday. She later found herself waking up on cardboard boxes near a homeless individual engaged in inappropriate behavior.
The student reported missing personal items, including her phone and purse. She informed the police that two homeless men kindly escorted her home before the break of dawn. Upon contacting the police, she was able to describe the location, which officers determined to be near City Hall.
The University of Georgia issued a community alert on Saturday afternoon, notifying that detectives were interviewing a person of interest.
