Athens-Clarke County Commission Finalizes Fiscal Year 2027 Budget
In a decisive move, the Athens-Clarke County Commission has given the green light to its fiscal year 2027 budget. During a special called meeting, the commission set property tax rates and outlined funding priorities, including a 4% market-rate adjustment for most employees and capital improvement projects.
In a separate vote, the commissioners decided 6-4 to add a Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST) referendum to the November ballot. This proposed 1% sales tax, if approved, would be in effect for five years and focus solely on providing property tax relief.
Proponents of the tax argue it would alleviate some of the financial pressure on property owners by shifting part of the burden to consumers, including visitors and students. However, some commissioners expressed concerns about its potential impact on renters and lower-income residents.
Additionally, the commission passed a resolution to initiate a review of inclusionary zoning and regulations concerning downtown development, aiming to further refine and enhance the urban landscape of Athens-Clarke County.
