North Carolina Extends Aid for Hurricane Helene Recovery

In a recent announcement, the government of North Carolina has reminded homeowners in the western part of the state about the upcoming deadline to apply for housing recovery assistance related to Hurricane Helene. The program, known as Renew NC, is specifically designed to support families in rebuilding or repairing their storm-damaged homes. With a deadline set for December 31, 2025, the initiative aims to reach as many affected residents as possible. Since its inception, the program has already processed thousands of applications, with several construction projects underway.

Renew NC is administered by the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Revitalization. The Single-Family Housing Program (SFHP) can provide various forms of assistance such as rehabilitation, reconstruction, replacement, or reimbursement for homes damaged by the hurricane. As of now, more than 6,000 applications have been received, with construction completed on five homes. In addition, multiple projects are ongoing in communities including Black Mountain, Hendersonville, and Gastonia.

The program prioritizes low- to moderate-income families, focusing on those with seniors, children, or disabled members in the household. It is available to homeowners in 28 counties across western North Carolina. Those who have already received aid from FEMA or insurance can still apply if their needs remain unmet.

Efforts to engage the community have included expanded neighborhood canvassing teams and additional call center specialists. These efforts aim to ensure that no eligible family is left without necessary aid. The program is largely staffed by local residents committed to helping their communities recover and rebuild.

Funded by a Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Renew NC has $807 million allocated for its Single-Family Housing Program. As the application deadline approaches, the focus will shift to reviewing applications, assessing budget needs, and moving eligible homeowners through the process efficiently.
