Placer County Invests in Housing Initiative to Boost Local Workforce Housing

In an ambitious push to enhance housing availability for local workers, Placer County’s Board of Supervisors has allocated a significant $500,000 to kickstart Housing Trust Tahoe, a nonprofit organization. This new entity will collaborate with the Tahoe Housing Hub to safeguard and increase the availability of housing for the workforce in the area.

The allocated funds are earmarked for essential operations including staffing, legal arrangements, property assessments, and community outreach related to housing and land donations. Tim Cussen, a housing specialist for Tahoe under Placer County, clarified, “The $500,000 isn’t to make any particular purchases. It goes toward diligence for future property acquisitions or donations. We’re looking at preserving workforce housing, and maybe even adding units when possible.”

Housing Trust Tahoe emerges from a legacy of local housing initiatives, building on previous efforts such as the Tahoe Housing Hub’s ADU Accelerator Pilot Program. Erin Casey, who leads both the Tahoe Housing Hub and Housing Trust Tahoe, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “It was incredible to see how many local people wanted to step up and be a part of the housing solution. We finally have a mechanism to do more, and do it quickly.”

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Housing Trust Tahoe is positioned to acquire and protect existing housing, accept land or property donations, and blend private and public investments to maintain affordable housing for the workforce. Already, the organization is on the verge of accepting its initial property donation, marking a promising start to its mission.
