A vehicle veered off the road and collided with a La Petite Academy on West Reno Avenue, starting a fire while 33 children and five adults were inside the premises. The daycare personnel’s quick thinking and emergency procedure execution ensured no harm occurred to the children.

Immediately after the crash, teachers began evacuating the children, including some as young as one year old. A teacher mentioned in a post that she had almost left early that day but stayed, ensuring she was there to help during the crisis.

“When I heard the loud bang and the power went out, kids were screaming,” she recounted. “That’s when I saw the fire. We were grabbing kids and holding them so they wouldn’t run back inside. Most of our one-year-olds don’t understand danger yet.”

Thanks to their bravery and effective training, everyone was evacuated safely without any injuries. Firefighters, upon arrival, dealt with heavy smoke and flames, acknowledging that regular evacuation drills contributed significantly to the positive outcome. Though the building itself faced extensive damage, the lives inside were preserved.

La Petite Academy expressed immense gratitude toward their staff’s “heroic” actions and thanked the first responders, neighbors, and other childcare centers that provided support, blankets, food, and water during the crisis.

“First and foremost, to our incredible staff members…Your professional response and quick action in getting our children swiftly to safety was nothing short of heroic.”

The police and fire crews were commended not just for their response to the emergency but also for their compassionate care towards the children afterward. The children have since returned safely to their families, leaving a community deeply appreciative of the remarkable outcome.
