Pilot Mountain mayor resigns

Pilot Mountain Mayor Steps Down Amidst Tumultuous Year

In a surprising move, Pilot Mountain Mayor Evan Cockerham has announced his resignation, which took effect this Tuesday. Cockerham, who has been at the helm since 2018, was also a former member of the Pilot Mountain Board of Commissioners.

Expressing gratitude in his resignation letter, Cockerham thanked the community, highlighting local organizations such as the Charles Stone Memorial Library and Surry County Schools for their support during his tenure.

Cockerham’s term was originally scheduled to conclude in 2026, marking a premature end to his leadership amid a period of turbulence for the town. The past year has been notably challenging, with the town grappling with significant issues. In 2024, the town faced controversy when Town Manager Michael Boaz was placed on leave due to allegations of financial mismanagement. This situation escalated when Boaz sued Pilot Mountain for defamation in October of the current year.
