Thousands of residents displaced by the Winston Weaver Fertilizer plant fire last year are poised to receive financial relief. The incident, which resulted in mass evacuations, now sees a conclusion with a substantial settlement.
Settlement Details
Judge Edwin Wilson has approved an $8 million class action settlement with the Winston Weaver Company. This settlement addresses the January 2022 fire that raised fears of a potential explosion and led to widespread evacuations.
Approximately 6,500 individuals living or working within a one-mile radius of the plant are eligible to benefit from this settlement. After deducting attorneys’ fees, each claimant might receive roughly $750.
Legal Perspectives
Gary Jackson, representing the plaintiffs, expressed satisfaction, describing the settlement as fair and reasonable in light of the stress and expenses incurred by evacuees.
Claiming Compensation
Eligible residents must submit a claim to receive their compensation. Claims can be filed either by mail or online. The timeline for payment distribution remains unspecified.
There is a separate legal proceeding for affected business owners, with the trial slated for January.
